Small luxury car sales in the US were down this year. They were also down for just the month of December. The segment is being impacted by SUV sales, but there’s also the fact that the industry is down overall.
In the month of December, the segment saw roughly 1,000 fewer sales than it did in December of 2018. The year as a whole saw sales sink by about 51,000 units. In terms of how the sales loss for the segment was spread out. December was much more of a mixed bag. 2019 as a whole saw the majority of models experience sales drops when compared with 2018.
Leading the pack in terms of sales volume for the year was the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. However, this same model saw a dramatic decrease in the month of December. Behind the Merc for the year was the BMW 3-Series. It saw sales rise for both December and the year as a whole. The Acura TLX was in third place and managed to squeak out a sales gain for the month of December but drop considerably for the year.
Overall, things could have looked better for the segment. We expect they will follow a similar trend in 2020.
