IONNA: Eight Automakers Built 790 Charging Stalls While Everyone Argued About Standards

TLDR: IONNA closed 2025 with 85 locations and 790 stalls, adding 300 in December alone. Eight automakers built the fastest-growing DC fast-charging network in America without federal funding. When your competitors can’t stop fighting each other, build your own infrastructure.

Skeptics called it vaporware when eight automakers announced a joint charging network in 2023. BMW, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes, Stellantis, and Toyota were supposedly too dysfunctional to build anything together.

Eighty-five stations and 790 charging stalls later, the skeptics look foolish.

The January 2026 numbers tell the story: IONNA added 300 stalls in December alone. The consortium fell slightly short of its 1,000-stall goal for 2025 but proved something more valuable than hitting an arbitrary target. They can build at speed.

Why Dealers Should Care

When a customer buys an Ioniq 5 or Blazer EV, they’re buying into a charging network their manufacturer co-owns. That’s a selling point worth remembering.

Plug & Charge functionality is live for BMW, GM, Hyundai, Kia, and Mercedes vehicles. Honda, Stellantis, and Toyota integration arrives later in 2026. Every IONNA station runs Alpitronic HYC400 chargers at 400 kW with both CCS1 and NACS connectors. Tesla owners and legacy EV owners charge at the same stalls. The format war ends at IONNA stations.

The Scale Question

The 2026 projection calls for 200-plus locations with 2,000-plus stalls by year-end. That would double Tesla Supercharger’s growth rate during the same period. The 2030 goal of 30,000 stallswould create the second-largest charging network in America behind Tesla.

California alone gets $250 million over three years with 1,000-plus bays. Nationwide, IONNA has contracted 4,000-plus stalls already in the pipeline awaiting construction.

The station types matter for different customer needs. Rechargeries offer full amenities including lounges, restrooms, and canopies. Rechargery Relays provide covered basic charging near existing amenities. Rechargery @ stations co-brand with hosts like Sheetz and Wawa. Rechargery Beacons serve destination charging with 20-plus stalls.

Tesla built the Supercharger network to sell Teslas. The legacy OEMs built IONNA because they couldn’t afford to let Tesla own the infrastructure forever. Nearly 800 stalls later, the answer to Tesla’s charging monopoly is operational.
