TLDR: On May 26 BYD launched the Sealion 06 DM-i from RMB 129,900 ($19,140). On May 28 BYD launched the Song Ultra DM-i at identical pricing. Both run the fifth-generation DM hybrid and offer up to 310 km CLTC pure-EV range. The Toyota RAV4 PHEV opens at $42,950. The value war is now penetrating the budget tier as aggressively as it hit premium.

The pricing was the news. The Sealion 06 DM-i opened at RMB 129,900 with a fifth-generation DM hybrid, a 175 kW drive motor, and 310 km of CLTC pure-EV range. BYD’s official news release confirmed four trims ladder to RMB 159,900 with a higher-capacity Blade Battery and optional LiDAR-assisted driving. At entry, the Sealion 06 sits inside the same RMB 130K bracket as the Song Plus DM-i but with 60 km of additional pure-EV range.

The Song Ultra DM-i landed two days later under the same ceiling. The BYD launch disclosure gave five variants from RMB 129,900 to 159,900, fifth-generation BYD DM, a 1.5L NA engine at 74 kW, an electric motor at 175 kW, Blade Battery options of 26.6 kWh (205 km CLTC EV) or 38 kWh (310 km CLTC EV), and an in-house AI agent integrated at launch. The Song Ultra also unveiled BYD’s Xuanji A3 4-nanometer L3 and L4 driving chip paired with the new DiPilot stack. BYD is the first Chinese OEM to ship an in-house 4nm vehicle chip on a volume model below RMB 200,000.

The four-day cadence is the strategy signal. The CPCA reports its first May retail print on June 1, and May 1-24 NEV retail of 619,000 units was already down 11% year over year. BYD is throwing two identically priced fifth-gen DM hybrids into the same retail window the May data is softest. The play is to push budget-tier sell-through before the June print, then translate that volume into a Q2 export narrative when the weakness lands publicly.

The competitive math against the RAV4 is the part Toyota dealers are now pricing. The RAV4 PHEV opens at $42,950 in the US and runs to roughly $49,950 in top trims. The Sealion 06 and Song Ultra open at $19,140 and ceiling at $23,500. The CLTC pure-EV range of 310 km translates to roughly 200 to 220 km of real-world EV operation. The RAV4 PHEV is rated at 42 miles (68 km) of EPA EV range. The BYD entries deliver three to four times the electric envelope at less than half the price. Toyota’s RAV4 production cut covered separately was already in effect through November. The Chinese price floor is the second pressure on the same model.

The fifth-generation DM platform is the underlying technical step. Generation four launched in 2024 with a mass-production thermal efficiency of 28%. Generation five took the engine to 46.06%, the highest in mass production. The 175 kW drive motor on both vehicles is a 15 kW increase over generation-one DM equivalents. Combined with the Blade Battery, both vehicles quote total operating range above 1,800 km. The cost basis is the part US analysts have spent four years debating. Two May launches at RMB 129,900 say the cost basis is lower than the debate assumed.

Antonio Filosa’s FaSTLAne 2030 plan one week ago committed to expanding joint ventures with Chinese automakers rather than tariffing them. The Sealion 06 and Song Ultra at RMB 129,900 are the operating reason that conversation is happening. A European-built Sealion 06 at €17,500 with a fifth-generation DM-i powertrain would dismantle the segment Fiat and Peugeot defend with Punto Cross and 2008 ICE pricing.

GCBC’s coverage of BYD’s April export record one week ago documented the 130,042-unit April export print. The Sealion 06 and Song Ultra at RMB 129,900 are the China-domestic anchor that gives BYD the cost basis for those export prices. A Sealion 06 landed in Hungary at the equivalent of €18,500 retail undercuts Volkswagen Tiguan PHEV by roughly €15,000.

The next data point is the CPCA June 1 release. The May full-month NEV print lands publicly and the June 8 print covers the first full week with both Sealion 06 and Song Ultra in retail flow. If BYD’s combined June retail print at the budget tier accelerates while domestic NEV demand stays below the year-ago baseline, the value-war hypothesis is confirmed at the structural level. If it does not, the May launches are early-cycle product saturation that did not translate.
