Volkswagen Group Keeps Its Up-to-1% Guide After a €5.9 Billion Q3 Operating Loss, Leaving Q4 Little Room

TLDR: Volkswagen Group kept its 2026 forecast on October 29, 2026, after a €6.4 billion Porsche goodwill write-down it had flagged in September pushed the third quarter to a €5.9 billion operating loss. Its guide of up to 1% operating margin on about €315 billion of revenue leaves the fourth quarter about €3.1 billion of operating profit at most, on GCBC’s arithmetic.

A loss VW forecast, and a thin quarter under it

Volkswagen Group’s third quarter landed where its September warning put it. That September 18 forecast update cut the year’s operating margin guide to up to 1%, from a range of 4.0% to 5.5%. It also said a goodwill charge of around €6 billion on Porsche would hit the third quarter, as GCBC reported at the time. The nine-month results release books it at €6.4 billion, within €7.8 billion of third-quarter special items. That one charge is larger than the quarter’s whole operating loss, and the release keeps the revenue, margin and cash guidance set in September.

Goodwill is an accounting value VW carries from its takeover of Porsche, and the write-down sits outside the Sport Luxury brand group’s own result, €1.5 billion through September after a loss a year earlier. Special items for the nine months, €8.7 billion in all, also include about €1 billion of write-downs on consolidated companies in China and costs for the planned sale of the Osnabrück plant.

Strip the special items out and the quarter is still thin. On GCBC’s arithmetic from the release, VW earned about €1.9 billion before special items in the third quarter, roughly 2.6% of revenue. That is well below the nine-month 3.8%. Chief financial officer Arno Antlitz called the nine-month rate “too low to continue investing strongly in our future.” The pressures he listed ran from US tariffs to a shrinking Chinese market and harder competition in Europe, and he said VW currently earns less on electric vehicles than on combustion cars.

What the up-to-1% guide leaves for the fourth quarter

VW expects about €315 billion of revenue in 2026. By GCBC’s arithmetic, the margin guide leaves about €82 billion of fourth-quarter revenue and, at the top of the range, about €3.1 billion of operating profit. Reaching it would take a fourth-quarter margin close to the nine-month rate before special items, and only if no new charge lands. In September VW put the year’s special items at around €10 billion, more than the nine months have booked so far.

Automotive net cash flow reached €4.4 billion through September, already inside VW’s guide of 3 to 6 billion euros for the year. The fourth quarter could post an outflow of about €1.4 billion and still stay in range.

Two assumptions sit under the forecast. It assumes “the current tariff situation in international trade remains unchanged,” and it leaves out any escalation in the Middle East, which VW says it cannot yet assess. For US readers, the guide rests on today’s tariff rates.

Where the US shows up in the release

The Core brand group, home of the Volkswagen brand, booked charges for “the already completed discontinuation of ID.4 production in the US.” GCBC reported in August that ID.4 production at the Chattanooga, Tennessee plant had stopped this year. The release gives no separate figure for that charge, and Core’s margin slipped to 4.1% from 4.4%.

Audi‘s group took the plainest North American hit. The Audi-led Progressive brand group’s operating result fell 26% to €1.2 billion, and VW names declining volumes in China and North America, along with negative residual value effects, as the main causes.

TRATON, the Trucks brand group, earned €1.7 billion through September, and the release says US tariffs weighed on that result. Tariffs and trade restrictions also cut the group’s vehicle sales, VW says, without naming a market.

What to watch

VW’s operating result stood at €71 million after nine months, so any fourth-quarter operating loss larger than that would leave 2026 negative at the operating line. The full-year report early next year will show whether further special items, or a change in US tariffs, use up the little room the guide leaves.
