October 25, 2026
Toyota sold 8,996 4Runners in the United States in September 2026, 1.7% above the 8,844 of a year earlier. Through September the nameplate stands at 107,987 against 67,000 over the same nine months of last year, 61.2% higher. That comparison measures the changeover to the sixth generation and not demand: the 4Runner barely sold at all from October 2024 to February 2025.
| Period | 2026 | 2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| September | 8,996 | 8,844 | +1.7% |
| Third quarter | 35,667 | 36,849 | -3.2% |
| January to September | 107,987 | 67,000 | +61.2% |
Toyota’s December 2024 release said the sixth-generation 4Runner would reach dealerships in January 2025, with nine grades, two of them new, and called the 2.4-litre turbocharged i-FORCE MAX hybrid new for the generation. The fifth generation had already run out: 60 4Runners sold in December 2024 and 160 in January 2025, against about 7,700 a month across that year.
The quarter went backwards because July and August both fell short of their 2025 months, even though September did not. That quarter is the first comparison of the sixth-generation car against itself: the new car had been on sale since early 2025, so the changeover flatters neither side of it.
September was the slowest month of the 4Runner’s year, below January’s 10,713 and more than 5,000 short of May’s 14,166. The nameplate still passed its entire 2025 total during August, with four months of the year to run.
The i-FORCE MAX hybrid made up 24.2% of 4Runner sales through nine months, 26,152 units in Toyota’s September sales release, against 20.3% a year earlier. The hybrid arrived with this generation, and it is the thing about the 4Runner that has actually changed.

The October 2025 to February 2026 changes are measured against the changeover, when the fifth generation had run out and the sixth had barely arrived, so they are arithmetic rather than a reading of demand; December 2025 is n/a because its base was 60 units. The March to June 2026 percentages are measured against the new car’s first months on sale.
More than 2.04 million 4Runners have been sold in the United States since the start of 2005, and 2021 remains the record year at 144,696.
539 4Runners sold in Canada in September, and the nine months there stand at 6,968 against 4,505. Canada ran the same shape more sharply: three, three and five units in the first quarter of 2025, then a ramp that peaked at 1,003 in March 2026 and has fallen away through the third quarter.
October’s figures from Toyota arrive in early November. The question the fourth quarter settles is whether the sixth-generation 4Runner runs at the level the fifth managed in 2023 or somewhere nearer its 2021 peak, and the midsize SUV rankings carry the nameplate against the rest of its segment month by month.
