June 5, 2026

TLDR: Hyundai’s May release on June 2 booked the first +90% YoY hybrid month in the brand’s US reporting history. Kia hit +179% hybrid YoY on the way to an all-time monthly retail record. American Honda printed 38,908 electrified units, a company first. Subaru’s hybrid pair set a new in-house monthly high. JD Power-GlobalData lifted the May SAAR forecast to 16.3M, the first 2026 calendar print at or above every major full-year forecast. Hybrid share of retail hit 16.3%. EV share softened to 7.0%.

Five releases, one direction

Hyundai sold 87,468 vehicles in May, up 3% on a 26-selling-day month. The line that anchored the call was hybrid: Sonata HEV +250% to a May record, with Tucson, Santa Fe, and Elantra hybrids all printing May records. CEO José Muñoz named gas prices as the “strong driver” of the electrified mix.

Kia closed Tuesday at 80,502 units and an all-time monthly retail record, up 11% on retail. The Telluride ran 13,665 (a fifth consecutive record month) and Sportage led volume at 18,405. The hybrid line: +179% YoY, the largest single-month hybrid surge across the Tuesday cluster.

American Honda’s 38,908 electrified units broke the brand’s all-time monthly record. CR-V at 37,848 ran hybrid mix above 50%. Passport at 5,480 (+74%) ran TrailSport mix at roughly 76%. Civic Hybrid set its own May record. The Honda brand alone was +7.3% YoY and +8.3% YTD.

Toyota came in differently. Total volume was off 0.6% on a new-RAV4 supply gap, but Camry at 35,000 (+14%) outsold RAV4 at 33,542 for the first time in years. RAV4 PHEV alone was +308%. The company’s electrified mix crossed 60% of US sales, a Toyota record. Subaru printed +10.4% to 57,748 (reversing February’s -8.2%), with the Forester and Crosstrek hybrids combining for the brand’s highest hybrid month. Mazda’s release added the cleanest headline +35% YoY and snapped an eight-month decline streak.

The forecast caught up

JD Power and GlobalData’s May forecast lifted the SAAR projection to 16.3 million, the first 2026 print at or above every major full-year number on the board (Cox 15.8M, S&P 15.98M, GlobalData 16.1M). Total May industry volume came in around 1.49M, up 5.8% YoY. Hybrid share of retail printed at 16.3%. EV share softened to 7.0% as federal credit removal worked through the funnel. The Asian-major cluster did not just deliver the SAAR. It delivered the powertrain mix the SAAR forecast assumed.

The driver named on every call was the pump. AAA’s national average hit a 2026 high of $4.56 on May 21. Hyundai, Kia, Honda, and Subaru all cited gas prices as a buying signal that pushed showroom traffic toward hybrid trim. The pump-anxiety-replaces-range-anxiety thesis that Polestar’s Lohscheller floated in mid-May arrived at the SAAR level six weeks later.

What June changes

AAA closed Thursday June 4 at $4.24. That is a 32-cent move off the May 21 peak in two weeks and the largest single-week pullback (-18 cents) of the 12-week war cycle. Hybrid showroom traffic placed against a $4.50 pump and hybrid showroom traffic placed against a $4.24 pump are not the same retail signal. The Asian-major cluster booked most of its May units against the higher number.

The wholesale-to-retail pump lag runs roughly 5 to 10 days. Monday’s oil bid puts the June 9-15 retail window in the position of testing whether the May hybrid pull holds. If June prints with the same hybrid mix, the new-vehicle pivot toward HEV powertrains has decoupled from the pump and is now a price-and-segment story. If the mix reverts, May was a gas-price spike with a long tail. The next data point is the early-June dealer pulse, and the data point after that is the July 1 monthly reporters.
