Maruti’s record
Business Standard’s coverage confirmed 242,688 total for May (domestic 193,535, exports 41,914). The 34.76% YoY rate is the largest single-market growth number in any major auto market across the cycle. Rushlane’s release coverage detailed the model mix: Wagon R, Baleno, and Brezza led volume, with the Grand Vitara hybrid pulling premium-segment growth.
Tata’s EV print is the second data point. Investywise’s Tata report put PVs at 59,790 (+42%) with EVs at 10,517 (+85%) on a new monthly record. The Tata EV family (Nexon, Punch, Tiago, Curvv) is now running above 10,000 units per month domestically. That number contradicts the global story that EVs are decelerating across every market. India is not decelerating. India is accelerating cleaner than anywhere else.
Mahindra makes it three. Business Upturn’s coverage put the brand at 99,636 (+20%), with domestic utility vehicles at 58,021 (+11%), commercial vehicles at 24,079 (+19%), and three-wheelers at 12,536 (+89%). The export number is the cleanest signal at +37%: Mahindra’s South African, Australian, and Middle Eastern programs are scaling against Toyota and Isuzu in the light-truck segments where India and Japan have historically competed at thin margins.
What changed inside the cluster
Hyundai India at 61,137 with domestic +9.1% and Toyota Kirloskar +7% close out the four-brand picture. Open Magazine’s sector wrap put it directly: Maruti, Hyundai, Mahindra, and Toyota Kirloskar all positive at the same time. That had not happened in any single Indian reporting month since H1 2024.
Toyota Kirloskar crossed a milestone underneath the +7% print: 300,000 cumulative hybrids sold across the entire program. The hybrid number is what links India to the May 2026 Asian-major hybrid cluster in the US. Toyota’s electrified mix crossed 60% of US sales the same month it crossed 300,000 cumulative Indian hybrids. The hybrid playbook is global.
The flex-fuel marker
Maruti closed the week with the structural piece. Maruti’s official press release confirmed Thursday the launch of the Wagon R Flex Fuel, India’s first production flex-fuel passenger car. The K12N 1.2L 4-cylinder engine carries an ethanol sensor, upgraded injectors and fuel pump, and a recalibrated ECU. Fuel-blend range runs E20 to E100. Initial availability is commercial sector only (fleet operators and cab aggregators). The launch event included Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Hardeep Singh Puri.
Autocar India’s coverage flagged the strategic question. India has roughly 50 to 100 E85/E100 stations operational between the Delhi-NCR cluster and the Mumbai-Nagpur corridor. The government target is 5,000 stations nationwide by end-2027. Brazil is the comparison: a mature flex-fuel passenger market across nearly the entire light-duty fleet. India is the next major economy to commercialize a sub-compact ethanol-flex platform. The infrastructure has to catch up to the product, and the policy timeline puts that infrastructure window inside 2027.
India’s auto market is decoupled from the Iran-war oil cycle in a way the rest of the major markets are not. The May print confirms it: a record month at the largest OEM, an EV record at the second-largest, +37% exports at the third-largest, and a production flex-fuel passenger car launched into a 5,000-station policy backdrop. The next data point is whether the monsoon-season slowdown holds the May curve. The 242,688 record at Maruti is what the market has to follow.
