TLDR: BMW cut its 2026 guidance on July 17 for the second time in a month: automotive EBIT margin to 1-3% from an original 4-6%, deliveries from stable to declining, group pre-tax profit to a “significant decline,” plus a new restructuring charge landing in the second half. JPMorgan called the cut “radical,” the stock hit a six-year low, and incoming CEO Milan Nedeljković now inherits a turnaround rather than a handover.

On July 17, BMW cut its 2026 guidance for the second time in 31 days. Automotive EBIT margin guidance now sits at 1-3%, down from the 4-6% the company still defended in May and first trimmed on June 16. Delivery guidance moved from “stable volumes” to a slight year-over-year decline, group pre-tax profit guidance moved from a moderate decrease to a “significant decline” in the company’s wording, and a new cost-reduction program books a one-time negative charge in the second half. JPMorgan called the cut “radical” as the stock touched a six-year low.

One warning is a quarter; two in a month is a structure. The drivers BMW names are China’s collapsing combustion business, Middle East energy costs, and weaker demand worldwide, and none of the three is a problem a good second half fixes. GCBC covered the China half of the squeeze in June, when BMW halted China EV production and reset its Neue Klasse rollout; the July warning is the income statement catching up to that story. On the revenue side, AlixPartners now projects Chinese brands at 16% of the EU market by 2030, five years ahead of the prior consensus, which means the share pressure behind these numbers is still accelerating.

The succession detail is the sharpest edge. Milan Nedeljković takes over a company guiding to a 1-3% automotive margin with a restructuring charge already booked against his first half. That is not a handover, it is a turnaround assignment issued before day one, and it recasts the CEO transition from succession planning to crisis staffing.

The one bright spot BMW can point at is American: the Spartanburg plant’s five-drivetrain iX5 line gives BMW flexibility no German plant currently matches. Watch the size of the H2 charge when it is quantified, and whether delivery guidance survives the third quarter. A third cut before year-end would move this from turnaround to emergency.
