TLDR: Subaru sold 15,233 Outbacks in the United States in August 2026, the model’s best month of the year and 3.4% below August 2025. The year stands at 92,108 through August, down 11.4% from 104,007. The decline sits in the first half: down 14.1% through June while the sixth-generation Outback sold down and the seventh generation, built in Japan rather than Indiana for the first time, reached retailers; July and August together are 5.2% below last year. 2025 closed at 157,716, the lowest year since 2022; the record is 2017 at 188,886.

Subaru sold 15,233 Outbacks in the United States in August 2026, 3.4% below the 15,768 of August 2025, according to Subaru of America’s September 1 release, which called it the Outback’s best month of the year so far. Through August the Outback stands at 92,108, 11.4% below the 104,007 of the same months in 2025.

157,716 is the 2025 answer, down 6.6% from 168,771 in 2024 by Subaru’s year-end release, and the lowest Outback year since 2022’s 147,262. The Outback was Subaru’s third-largest line in 2025 behind the Crosstrek (191,724) and the Forester (175,070), and it holds the same place through August 2026. 2,494,028 Outbacks have been sold since January 2010; the record year is 2017 at 188,886 and the record month December 2016 at 20,695. August 2026 ranks 42nd of the 200 months since January 2010.

43% was the year-over-year gap in March 2026, the widest of the year, against a March 2025 that was itself the best month of that year at 17,539. January was down 23.3%, February 24.3%, April 8.3%, May flat at 0.4%, and June up 32.7% against the weakest month of 2025; July was down 7.1% and August 3.4%. Subaru’s August 2025 pricing release described the 2026 Outback as the model’s seventh generation, assembled in Gunma, Japan, from $34,995 for the Premium trim with the Base trim discontinued, and due at retailers late in 2025. Read against that calendar, the first half of 2026 is the changeover: the sixth generation, built at Subaru of Indiana Automotive, sold down while the imported car filled the lots, and the two months since are the first with only the new car to sell.

100 jobs is what Subaru of Indiana Automotive said it would add to build the Forester, gasoline and hybrid, in the Outback’s place; the plant’s general counsel told Inside INdiana Business in April 2025 that the decision dated from May 2024, before the 2025 tariffs. The Outback therefore enters its first full import year with a home-built comparison base, and the Legacy sedan that shared its platform and plant sold five units in August against 2,087 a year earlier as its run ends. GCBC covered the Gunma line the new Outback shares with the Trailseeker in February.

138,000 to 140,000 is where the year lands on the January to August pace, straight-lined or scaled by 2025’s seasonal split (65.9% of that year came in the first eight months). Either figure sits below 2025’s 157,716 and within a few hundred units of 2014’s 138,790, so 2026 is on course to be the smallest Outback year since 2013 or 2014, with September to December deciding which. The comparison bases ahead are the softest of 2025: September 12,406, October 13,441, November 13,089, December 14,773. A September print above 12,406 would be the Outback’s first year-over-year gain since June and its first against a normal month; Subaru reports it around October 1.

62,028 vehicles is what Subaru of America sold in August, up 1.3%, and 423,822 for the year, down 3%, so the Outback is falling faster than the brand around it: the Forester (140,487, up 15.1%) and the Crosstrek (122,953, down 4.3%) are the lines holding the total. The Outback was 24.6% of Subaru’s August and 21.7% of its year to date.

How many Subaru Outbacks were sold in 2025?

157,716 in the United States, down 6.6% from 168,771 in 2024.

Is the Outback selling better or worse than last year?

Worse: down 11.4% through August 2026, but the decline is concentrated in the first half, when the sixth generation sold down; July and August together are 5.2% below last year and August was the best month of 2026.

Where is the 2026 Outback built?

Gunma, Japan, per Subaru’s pricing release. Earlier generations were built at Subaru of Indiana Automotive in Lafayette, which now builds the Forester in the Outback’s place.

What was the Outback’s best year?

2017, at 188,886.
