Honda’s Production Cuts Expose Supply Chain Vulnerability

When Governance Becomes Scarcity

Marysville and Alliston plants cut to 50% capacity as Dutch-Chinese standoff over Nexperia proves jurisdictional control now matters more than silicon capacity

TLDR: Honda became the first major automaker to announce production cuts from the Nexperia semiconductor crisis, slashing output by half at its Ohio Accord plant and Ontario Civic facility starting October 27.
The shortage exposes two vulnerabilities: Honda’s just-in-time inventory philosophy left it with a two-week chip buffer while competitors hold four to six, and the industry’s dependence on fifty-cent discrete semiconductors that exist physically but can’t move because of export restrictions.
This isn’t the 2021 chip shortage redux. It’s worse—a crisis where governance, not manufacturing capacity, controls supply.
