BMW closed out a $1.7 billion investment across Plant Spartanburg and the new Plant Woodruff in South Carolina this week and confirmed the iX5 60 xDrive as the first fully electric BMW ever assembled in the United States. Production begins in late 2026. New BMW Group Chairman Milan Nedeljković presided over the announcement at the company’s Home of X event, in his first major appearance since taking the role, and the split of the money tells its own story: the Spartanburg line was rebuilt to take electric drivetrains, and Woodruff exists to assemble the batteries that feed it.
One assembly line at Spartanburg will build the X5 family in five drivetrains: gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell. No BMW plant anywhere has built a single model across all five on one line, and few plants from any manufacturer have tried, because mixing high-voltage battery installation, hydrogen tank handling and conventional powertrain marriage on a shared line multiplies the stations, the tooling and the training every takt has to absorb. The engineering point is flexibility. When the same line can flex between a gasoline X5 for the US market, a diesel for export and an iX5, the plant stops caring which powertrain wins the decade, and the capital stops being a wager on a single outcome.
The Week the Incentives Died
Washington let the Section 30C charger credit expire on June 30, the last federal EV incentive still standing, in the same news cycle that BMW committed its electric flagship to US production. The two facts point in opposite directions on purpose. Federal support for EV demand is gone, while tariff policy keeps pulling EV supply onshore. A 25 percent Section 232 auto tariff makes imported vehicles expensive enough that building in South Carolina beats shipping from Bavaria even without a single consumer incentive left on the table.
Spartanburg has built 7.3 million vehicles since 1994 and more than 412,000 X models in 2025 alone, a run rate that moves in step with BMW’s US sales. Six fully electric BMW models are slated for US assembly by 2030 under the plan confirmed this week, and the iX5’s estimated 435-mile range would place the first of them among the longest-range EVs built in America. Mercedes ran the same localization play at Tuscaloosa with the GLC, a move GCBC covered in May. German luxury capacity keeps migrating to the tariff-safe side of the Atlantic.
ACEA’s January-through-May registration data explains the other half of the decision. Battery electric vehicles took 20 percent of EU registrations in the first five months of 2026, up 4.7 points in a year, while hybrids led all powertrains at 37.8 percent. BMW’s home continent is electrifying on a curve that leaves no room to retreat from EVs, and its second-largest market just stopped paying anyone to buy them. A five-drivetrain line is what a rational manufacturer builds when its two biggest markets pull in opposite directions.
The Money Is Already Spent
The Spartanburg news also reads differently against BMW’s own June. The company halted China EV production and reset its Neue Klasse rollout there, a stumble GCBC covered on June 22, and it has warned that automotive EBIT margin could land between 1 and 3 percent this year. What separates this week’s announcement from the investment promises the industry produces in difficult stretches is tense: the $1.7 billion is spent, the line exists, the model is named and the date is set.
Late 2026 is the first date that matters, when iX5 production starts and the US market gains a domestically built electric BMW to measure against a policy environment that no longer subsidizes the purchase. BMW’s half-year report is the second, because it will show whether the 1 to 3 percent margin warning was conservative or generous, and whether finished American capacity starts doing the work its squeezed German margins cannot. The five-drivetrain line was designed for exactly this kind of uncertainty, which makes it the most honest statement any factory has made about this market in years.
