Sales passed 100,000 in 1986 at 107,225 and jumped 33.6 percent to 149,566 in 1988, reaching 156,118 in 1989, the high of the decade. The Cherokee then settled between 120,960 and 125,443 a year from 1990 to 1994, slipped to 110,552 in 1995 and 110,356 in 1996, and recovered with 130,041 in 1997 and 146,298 in 1998. 1999 is the best year on record at 165,261. 2000 fell to 141,457, and the 2001 run-out, the XJ’s last, came to 74,490 as the Liberty arrived.
