Midsize luxury SUV sales in the U.S. were up from 585,963 units in 2021 to 637,075 units in 2022. In 2021, the midsize luxury SUV segment in the U.S. was an incredibly competitive and popular arena, reflecting consumers’ evolving tastes and the industry-wide shift toward SUVs. These vehicles combined the practicality of increased cargo space and higher driving positions with the premium features and finishes expected in the luxury category. The midsize luxury SUV segment was one of the bright spots in the automotive industry. As consumers moved away from traditional sedans, these SUVs offered a blend of luxury, versatility, and, in many cases, performance. Reflecting the broader trend in the automotive industry, many models in this category started to offer plug-in hybrid or fully electric variants.

Long a best-seller in this segment, the Lexus RX was known for its comfort, reliability, and value retention. The RX 450h offered a hybrid variant. An important player in Mercedes’ lineup, the GLE combined cutting-edge tech with a range of powerful engines. The model saw a redesign in 2019, and its benefits were still being realized in 2021.
