GMC is a division of American automotive giant General Motors. Known for its SUVs and pickups, the brand is often positioned as a premium offering to the Cherolet brand (another GM division).

General Motors beat expectations with its 2023 FY earnings and will be relying on GMC, alongside its other brands, to help improve that performance for 2024.

2024 is already shaping up to be an important year for GMC, with the launch of at least two important models. The Acadia SUV has been completely redesigned and set for its third generation. Then there are others like the Hummer SUV EV and an electric variant of the Sierra pickup. The Sierra HD pickup is also set for a 2024 refresh, while updates to the Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs are expected in 2025.

The GMC lineup is impressive, and the variety, together with several configurable options, should help the carmaker consolidate market share in the various segments where it is present.

Our Take

There are only a few trucks that can match the versatility of the GMC Sierra 2500 heavy-duty work truck. The hardy vehicle shines with its impressive towing and payload capacity, especially with the optional diesel powertrain. GMC has also offered the Sierra 2500 HD with a variety of configurations and powertrain options, allowing for individual customer preferences. The SLT trim level comes standard with GMC’s MultiPro tailgate, heated front seats, heated steering wheel and remote start.

Our Take

The GMC Terrain is the carmaker’s offering in the small to midsized SUV segment. It is a congested segment filled with countless decent alternatives. However, the Terrain SUV is still a worthy consideration with its comfortable interior and easy-to-use technology features. The top-trim Denali barely breaks the $40,000 mark, but it adds perks such as a premium Bose 7-Speaker sound system, heads-up display, heated and ventilated seats and standard all-wheel-drive. An 84 rating from JD Power is also a strong plus point for the GMC Terrain SUV.

Our Take

The GMC Acadia is all-new for the 2024 MY, kicking off the third generation for the three-row mid-size SUV as it aims to take on the likes of the Ford Explorer and Kia Telluride. The 3rd-gen Acadia is bigger than the previous model, offering more useful space. For example, there’s now 80 percent more cargo room behind the third row. All Acadia trim models are equipped with the same powertrain, making the mid-level Elevation Premium package a decent bargain for the price. The Elevation Premium trim level comes with a host of desirable standard features, such as a 15-inch premium infotainment system and 7-passenger seating with second-row captain’s chairs.

Our Take

The GMC Yukon shares the same mechanical underpinnings as the Chevy Tahoe. However, the Yukon is deliberately packaged as a fancier offering with its upscale styling and premium finishing. The top-end Denali and Denali Ultimate trims are quite pricey and at that price point, you might as well consider other alternatives. However, the SLT trim is a pretty decent option with plenty of ‘nice-to-have’ features like leather upholstery, power liftgate and several driver-assistance features.

Our Take

The GMC Hummer SUV sheds the truck bed of the pickup version but there’s still plenty to love about the 4.5-ton (9,000 lbs) SUV. First, its shorter wheelbase means it’s slightly more maneuverable and off-road worthy. Then there is the infinitely cool crab-walk mode that allows the EV to move diagonally. The heavy SUV is also deceptively rapid for its size, able to hit 60 mph in less than 4 seconds. With the Hummer SUV, GMC has done a great job of proving that electric vehicles, regardless of their configuration, can still be a lot of fun.
