Before the eighth-generation car arrived, that meant the regular Golf hatchback alongside the GTI and Golf R; in North America today the Golf is sold only as the front-drive GTI and the all-wheel-drive Golf R, both powered by versions of Volkswagen’s 2.0-liter turbocharged EA888 four-cylinder. Volkswagen reports U.S. and Canadian sales by quarter, so the monthly figures below are quarterly totals spread across three months.

Volkswagen Golf Sales in the United States

Volkswagen Golf sales in the United States peaked in 2017 at 68,978, the best year in our records, after the seventh-generation car lifted the family from 33,675 in 2014 to 65,308 in 2015. Volume then fell for four straight years, bottoming at 6,537 in 2021 as the Mk7 ran out and the regular hatchback left the U.S. lineup. The GTI and Golf R rebuilt the total to 7,893 in 2022, 10,690 in 2023 and 15,268 in 2024, a 42.8 percent jump, before sales eased 31.5 percent to 10,459 in 2025. Every quarter of 2025 landed between 2,170 and 2,877. The first half of 2026 is running level with a year ago at 5,472, up 1.1 percent from 5,412, and the second quarter’s 3,182 was the family’s best quarter since late 2024.

Volkswagen Golf Sales in Canada

In Canada the Golf family totaled 2,356 in 2022, 4,246 in 2023 and 7,664 in 2024, the strongest year of the current generation, with a best quarter of 2,398 in the third quarter of 2024. Sales slipped 26.0 percent to 5,671 in 2025, with the spring quarter strongest at 2,043. The first half of 2026 finished at 3,076, down 2.6 percent from 3,159 a year earlier, and the second quarter again carried the year at 1,941.
