Mercedes-Benz G-Class Overview

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, often referred to as the G-Wagen (short for “Geländewagen,” which means “cross-country vehicle” in German), is a series of luxury off-road vehicles produced by Mercedes-Benz. Known for its iconic, boxy design and remarkable off-road capabilities, the G-Class has become a status symbol in many parts of the world. The G-Class was originally developed as a military vehicle in the 1970s after a suggestion from the Shah of Iran, who was a significant shareholder of Mercedes at the time. The first civilian version was introduced in 1979.

The G-Class boasts a distinct and largely unchanged exterior design since its inception, characterized by its upright, boxy shape. This design has become iconic and is one of the vehicle’s most endearing qualities. Its ladder-frame construction and three locking differentials make it exceptionally capable off-road. Over the decades, while it has gained more luxury features and refinements, it has retained its rugged, go-anywhere abilities.

Over the years, the G-Class has been offered in various body styles, including short and long-wheelbase versions, convertibles, and even 6×6 models. While originally more utilitarian, the G-Class has evolved into a luxury SUV, with modern models featuring high-end interiors, advanced infotainment systems, and a range of comfort features. Mercedes-AMG, the performance subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz, produces high-performance versions like the AMG G 63, characterized by powerful engines and sportier design elements. The G-Class underwent a significant redesign in 2018, which was its first major update since its introduction. While it retained its iconic look, the new model featured a more modern interior, additional safety features, and improved on-road handling, while preserving its off-road prowess.

The current G-Class is powered by a variety of engines, including a 3.0-liter V6, a 4.0-liter V8, and a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8. It is available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The G-Class is a capable off-roader, with features like a low-range transfer case, a locking differential, and approach and departure angles of 31 and 30 degrees, respectively. The G-Class is also a luxurious SUV, with features like a leather interior, a Burmester sound system, and a panoramic sunroof. The G-Class starts at $139,900 in the United States.
