GMC Caballero Overview

The GMC Caballero is a coupe utility vehicle, or more colloquially, a “car-truck” or “ute.” It was produced by General Motors for the GMC brand from 1978 to 1987. The GMC Caballero is the equivalent to the Chevrolet El Camino for GMC, sharing the same platform, body styles, and the majority of components. The Caballero, like the El Camino, was based on the A-body and later the G-body car platform from General Motors.

Resembling a car from the front to the rear passenger compartment, the Caballero had a flat open bed from behind the passenger compartment to the back, like a pickup truck. Over its production run, the Caballero was available with a range of V6 and V8 engines. GMC offered special trim levels and editions of the Caballero, such as the Amarillo and Laredo editions, which usually included special paint, decals, and sometimes additional equipment.

The GMC Caballero was produced from 1978 to 1987. Its production began a year after the fifth generation of the Chevrolet El Camino was introduced. While the El Camino is more widely recognized due to Chevrolet’s larger market presence, the Caballero still had its niche. It was essentially a more upscale or deluxe version of the El Camino, as GMC traditionally positioned its vehicles slightly upmarket compared to Chevrolet.
