Small SUV Sales In Europe – 2016 Year End

After more than 1 million small crossovers and SUVs were sold in Europe in 2015, this remains one of the fastest growing segments with an increase of 16% to 1.4 million sales in 2016, more than half the volume of the subcompact hatchbacks, Europe largest segment and the models on which most of these crossovers are based. The growth is mostly fueled by recent model introductions, as proven by the fact that the entire top-4 loses share of the segment. Still, only two models in the top-10 lose volume in 2016, although that figure doubles to four in the last quarter.

As expected, the Renault Captur holds on to the segment lead and becomes the first small crossover to sell over 200,000 units annually in Europe. More surprisingly, the Captur manages this performance without having been updated since its launch while its two closes rivals have been facelifted in 2016. Of these two, the Opel/Vauxhall Mokka sees stable sales and loses its second place to the Peugeot 2008, the fastest growing model in the top-4.

Day 199 — Omani authorities said the Panama-flagged tanker El Gaia is being towed to port after an engine-room fire was brought under control about 103 nautical miles northeast of Musandam, with two crew still missing and 23 evacuated by a Royal Navy of Oman vessel (gCaptain and The Maritime Executive, Sep 15-16). The IRGC said the ship struck a mine; US Central Command said Iran had attacked it twice. Neither account is confirmed. The Congressional Budget Office put the war's direct Pentagon cost at $38B through July and projected it will add about 0.5 percentage points to US consumption inflation in 1Q27. Houthi forces took the Greater and Lesser Hanish islands in the southern Red Sea. IMF PortWatch's published day advanced to Sep 13 at eight Hormuz transits. AAA's national diesel average set a 13th consecutive record at $6.3103/gal and California diesel set a fresh state record at $8.2668/gal.
