Best of the 2023 Genesis Lineup

'Luxury Evolved'

Genesis is a luxury automotive brand that places emphasis on refined design, advanced engineering and uncompromising craftsmanship. Established in 2015 as a division of Hyundai Motor Company, Genesis gained quick inroads into the market with its lineup of innovative vehicles, going up against the likes of other brands like Mercedes Benz and BMW.

Genesis has consistently pushed the boundaries of automotive innovation and design. The carmaker is currently on a roadmap to electrifying its entire model lineup by 2030.

For now, though, Genesis has a mix of both combustion and electrified vehicles in its inventory, some of which are featured here.

The imperious flagship of the Genesis family aims right for the market traditionally dominated by luxurious sedans like the Benz S-Class and BMW 7-Series. It may still have some catching up to do, but the G90 impresses with a very elegant design, premium interior finishing and a silky smooth ride.

Specifications

  • MSRP: starts at $56,925 USD /  $76,265 CAD
  • Engine: 2.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder (optional 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6)
  • Power / Torque: 300 hp /  311 lb-ft

  • Fuel Economy: 18 MPG (City) /  23 MPG (Highway)
  • Basic Warranty: 5 years /  60,000 miles (100,000 km)

Our Take

There are no hybrid options for the GV80, and the available third-row seating is best suited for kids. However, these are small niggles in the overall picture of the large SUV offers. As with other vehicles in the Genesis lineup, there is no lack of luxury appointments in the GV80. The ride, especially for the more powerful trim options, feels well-balanced and supremely refined.

Specifications

  • MSRP: $70,745 USD /  $94,780 CAD
  • Engine: Permanent-magnet synchronous AC Motor (front & rear)
  • Power / Torque: 483 hp /  516 lb-ft  (combined)
  • Drivetrain: AWD

  • Range: 235 miles (378 km)
  • Basic Warranty: 5 years /  60,000 miles (100,000 km)

Our Take

It’s the first Genesis vehicle to be built on a dedicated EV platform and forms the tip of the spear as the brand aims for total electrification by 2030. Genesis is known for its bold designs, and the GV60 is no different with a sleek, athletic ‘coupe crossover’ styling. The ride feels firm and composed, plus the 350-kW DC fast-charger compatibility is a welcome addition. Genesis still has a long way to go with its electrification plans, but the GV60 definitely feels like a big step in the right direction.

Specifications

  • MSRP: $80,950 USD /  $108,452 CAD
  • Engine: Permanent-magnet synchronous AC Motor (front & rear)
  • Power / Torque: 365 hp / 516 lb-ft  (combined)
  • Drivetrain: AWD
  • 0-60 mph: 4.1 seconds
  • Fuel Economy: 105 MPGe (City) /  89 MPGe (Highway)
  • Range: 280 miles (450 km)
  • Basic Warranty: 5 years /  60,000 miles (100,000 km)

Our Take

The electrified G80 is identical, design-wise, to the gasoline-powered variant. The single notable difference is that the electric G80 gets a dual electric motor setup instead of a combustion engine. The battery pack reduces the trunk space by two cubic feet, but the electrified G80 is still an altogether compelling package with its competitive range, a first-class interior and polished ride quality.
