Midsize cars, also known as D-segment cars, were once a mainstay of the U.S. auto market, how this is the lowest level of midsize car sales in the U.S. since 2009. The decline continues thanks to rising popularity of SUVs. SUVs are seen as being more practical and versatile than midsize cars, and they offer the same level of fuel efficiency. The sheer number of SUV models and segments has grown and the versatility of those SUVs has improved over the last decade. Due to declining sales, some automakers decided to discontinue or not renew certain midsize models in their lineups. This was part of a broader trend of automakers reducing their sedan offerings in favor of SUVs and trucks.
