China’s 50 Best-Selling Models Through August 2026: Ten Small Cars Hold Two-Thirds of Their Class

6,589,223 vehicles, 38.4% of the 17,162,602 passenger vehicles China’s factories shipped in the first eight months of 2026, went to the 50 models in the table below. GCBC built the list by merging all sixteen of Gasgoo’s monthly model rankings, which publish Chinese and foreign brands separately. Gasgoo’s figures are factory wholesale including exports, the China Passenger Car Association’s basis: its Model Y and Model 3 add up to 647,694 for the year, which is the CPCA’s Tesla China figure to the unit. This is a list of what China builds and ships, at home and abroad, not of what Chinese buyers registered; GCBC covered the retail side of August on September 15.

Small cars are a few big hits

67% of China’s A0-class volume this year came from ten nameplates: the Xingyuan, Seagull, Binyue, Yuan UP, Dolphin, MG ZS, Leapmotor A10, Tiggo 5X, Yuan UP DM-i and Binguo Pro. A0 is Gasgoo’s size below compact, and it is 15.3% of everything shipped this year but 26.7% of the top 50. The larger classes are spread across many more models. The top-50 nameplates in the compact (A) and mid-size (B) classes each hold about 37% of their class, and the five C-class models 29%.

Two foreign companies, and a gap

12 of the 50 carry foreign badges, and two companies account for most of them. Tesla’s two models sold 647,694, or 41% of the 1,572,267 foreign-brand units in the list, and Volkswagen’s two joint ventures place six nameplates with 566,245 between them. The other four are the Nissan Sylphy, Toyota’s Camry hybrid, the BMW 3 Series and the Ford Territory that Jiangling builds. No foreign model ranks between the Model 3 in third place and the VW Lavida in 28th.

Half plug-in, by nameplate

25 of the 50 are plug-in models, 18 battery-electric and seven plug-in hybrids, and they make up 58.4% of the list’s volume. 22 are ICE only (37.6%), two are sold as ICE or hybrid, and one, the Camry, is a hybrid. Those shares describe these 50 models, not the market, because Gasgoo publishes no powertrain total to compare them with. Wholesale counting matters most here: Chery places five ICE models in the list, and GCBC reported in August that Chery exported more cars in July than any Chinese automaker had in a single month.

60,955 Xingyuans in August made it the second month this year, after January, in which Geely’s small hatchback outsold the Model Y; the Tesla still leads the year by 49,593. Gasgoo’s September rankings should arrive in the second half of October, and GCBC’s China brand sales hub carries the historical series.
