The AITO M5
The AITO M5 is a premium compact SUV marketed exclusively in China under the AITO (Adding Intelligence to Auto) brand. It is built by Seres with deep technical collaboration from Huawei and serves as the brand’s entry point below the larger M7. Unlike global luxury SUVs, the M5 was never meant for North American or European markets, instead targeting China’s fast‑growing new‑energy segment with a mix of range‑extended and fully electric powertrains.
Model Overview & Powertrains
The first generation M5 launched in early 2022 as a range‑extended electric vehicle (EREV). It pairs a 1.5‑litre turbocharged four‑cylinder engine acting solely as a generator with one or two electric motors. Rear‑wheel‑drive versions use a single motor rated at roughly 268 hp, while dual‑motor models deliver up to about 489 hp. Battery options range from around 40 to 83 kWh, and combined CLTC driving range with the petrol generator runs from about 1,275 km to 1,440 km. A pure battery‑electric M5 with a larger pack is also available, offering an estimated 552–620 km of range depending on configuration. All variants feature Huawei’s HarmonyOS infotainment system on a 15‑inch touchscreen, a 10.25‑inch digital instrument cluster and advanced driver‑assist functions.
Inside, the M5’s cabin emphasises comfort and technology with leather seating, a large panoramic sunroof and high‑end audio. The SUV can sprint from 0–100 km/h in as little as about 4.4 seconds in dual‑motor trims, while base models still deliver brisk performance. Pricing starts around CNY 250,000 for the standard EREV and rises toward CNY 320,000 for high‑spec trims.
Sales Performance
The M5 entered the market ahead of the M7 and quickly became the brand’s volume driver. According to Chinese industry data, AITO delivered tens of thousands of M5s in its debut year and continued to grow through 2024 as awareness of the brand increased. Because the M5 is sold only in China, its sales figures reflect domestic market trends rather than global demand. The arrival of updated trims with larger battery packs and the introduction of a battery‑electric variant have helped sustain its momentum. Nevertheless, the M5 remains a niche vehicle compared with mainstream crossovers in the West.

The AITO M5 slots below the AITO M7 in the brand’s line‑up. Shoppers looking for similar range‑extended SUVs may also cross‑shop the Li Auto L7 and L8. As AITO expands its portfolio, expect future models to adopt pure electric powertrains and compete more directly with premium EVs.
