Its latest generation has pushed the nameplate to record sales in North America against rivals like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.

Kia Sportage Sales in the United States

Sportage sales in the United States grew steadily for years and then accelerated with the current generation. From about 89,000 units in 2019, volume rose to 124,244 in 2022, 140,780 in 2023, 161,917 in 2024, and 182,823 in 2025, a record and a gain of roughly 13 percent year over year. Through June 2026 Kia had sold 94,907 Sportages in the United States.

Kia Sportage Sales in Canada

The Sportage has become one of Kia Canada’s core models. Canadian volume climbed from around 12,000 units at the turn of the decade to 18,191 in 2023 and a record 23,906 in 2025, up about 33 percent from 2024.

Kia Sportage Generations

First Generation (1993-2004)

The first-generation Sportage was a compact SUV with both two-door soft-top and four-door configurations. It was relatively basic, reflecting the automotive landscape and Kia’s position in the market during the 1990s. The first-generation Sportage was based on the Hyundai Tucson platform. It was available with a 2.0L four-cylinder engine that produced 116 horsepower and 123 lb-ft of torque.

Second Generation (2004-2010)

This generation marked a shift from a traditional SUV to a more urban-oriented crossover design. The vehicle grew in size and offered a more car-like driving experience. The second-generation Sportage was a major redesign that introduced a more modern design and a wider range of engine options. It was available with a 2.0L four-cylinder engine that produced 140 horsepower and 136 lb-ft of torque, and a 2.7L V6 engine that produced 173 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque.

Third Generation (2010-2016)

The Sportage received a complete design overhaul, overseen by Kia’s then-new design head, Peter Schreyer. The new design was modern and more aligned with global trends.  The third-generation Sportage was another major redesign that introduced a more stylish design and a more advanced interior. It was available with a 2.4L four-cylinder engine that produced 176 horsepower and 168 lb-ft of torque, and a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produced 260 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque.

Fourth Generation (2016-2022)

Building on the success of the previous generation, the fourth-gen Sportage featured a refined design and even more advanced features, both in terms of technology and safety. The fourth-generation Sportage was a facelift of the third generation that introduced a few minor changes to the exterior and interior. It was available with the same engine options as the third generation.

Fifth Generation (2022-Present)

The fifth-generation Sportage is the latest redesign and is based on the Hyundai Tucson platform. It is available with a 2.5L four-cylinder engine that produces 187 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque, and a 1.6L turbocharged four-cylinder engine and an electric motor that produce a combined 227 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque.
