Acura MDX Generations

First Generation (2001–2006)

The original MDX rode on the same platform as the Honda Pilot and boasted a 3.5‑litre SOHC VTEC V‑6 producing 240 hp and 245 lb‑ft of torque. It featured a four‑speed (later five‑speed) automatic transmission and Acura’s VTM‑4 system that automatically apportioned torque between the front and rear axles. With its car‑like handling, spacious interior and strong reliability ratings, the first‑generation MDX quickly became the best‑selling three‑row luxury SUV in the U.S.

Second Generation (2007–2013)

The second‑generation MDX introduced sharper styling, a longer wheelbase and a new 3.7‑litre VTEC V‑6 generating 300 hp and 275 lb‑ft of torque. It debuted Acura’s SH‑AWD torque‑vectoring system and offered an available Sport package with active dampers. A 2010 refresh brought a new grille, improved interior materials and a six‑speed automatic transmission. Sales remained strong as the MDX continued to set the benchmark for performance and versatility in its class.

Third Generation (2014–2020)

Acura redesigned the MDX for 2014 with more aerodynamic styling and a new 3.5‑litre direct‑injection V‑6 producing 290 hp and 267 lb‑ft of torque. Weight savings and a more rigid body improved efficiency, while an available nine‑speed automatic enhanced responsiveness. The 2017 refresh introduced Acura’s diamond‑pentagon grille and an optional Sport Hybrid SH‑AWD system derived from the NSX, combining the V‑6 with three electric motors to deliver 321 hp and exceptional fuel economy. Despite strong competition, the MDX remained one of the top‑selling luxury SUVs.

Fourth Generation (2022–Present)

The fourth‑generation MDX moved to an all‑new light‑truck platform with a double‑wishbone front suspension, giving it the most sophisticated handling ever in an Acura SUV. The standard 3.5‑litre V‑6 continues to produce 290 hp and 267 lb‑ft of torque, now paired with a smooth 10‑speed automatic transmission. The performance‑oriented Type S, introduced in 2022, features a 3.0‑litre turbocharged V‑6 with 355 hp, adaptive air suspension and Brembo brakes. For 2025, Acura updated the MDX with a bolder front fascia, a Google‑powered infotainment system and the AcuraWatch 360 safety suite. With its blend of performance, technology and comfort, the MDX remains Acura’s flagship crossover.
