Xpeng Sales Data, Trends & Analysis for the Chinese Automotive Market

XPeng Motors (formerly known as Xiaopeng Motors) was established in 2014 as an R&D company and the brand started sales of its first electric car in 2018. Production has been outsourced to Haima Auto, a small domestic automaker, which saves the massive investment in production capacity. The brand’s mission statement says it is “focused on local needs and the consumer experience, while also integrating autonomous driving and internet electronic technologies, our vehicles are greater than the sum of their parts. XPENG is not only dedicated to serving every family with technology, but also to becoming a companion that truly understands you.” In late 2017, Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding and Foxconn Technology Group invested 2,2 billion yuan (US$350 million) in XPeng motors, bringing the total investment into the company to 5 billion yuan. Sales figures for the Xpeng G3 EV. Car sales statistics from China only include domestic production and exclude imported models.

Xpeng China Sales Figures & Recent Highlights

Xpeng Motors was co-founded by He Xiaopeng (who later became the company’s chairman and CEO), Xia Heng, and He Tao, former senior executives from Guangzhou Auto, Zotye Auto, and Guangzhou Automobile Group components, respectively. The company attracted significant investment from major tech firms like Alibaba, Xiaomi, and Foxconn, showcasing its positioning not just as a carmaker, but also as a tech-oriented firm.

Xpeng launched its first model, the G3 SUV, in 2018. The vehicle was well-received for its blend of technology, performance, and affordability. The P7, a smart sedan, followed the G3 and has been praised for its range, autonomous driving capabilities, and high-tech features. It is seen as a direct competitor to Tesla’s Model 3 in the Chinese market. Xpeng continues to develop and expand its product lineup, emphasizing technological innovation and smart features.

One of Xpeng’s distinguishing features is its focus on autonomous driving technology. The company has invested heavily in developing its own advanced driver-assistance systems. Xpeng’s vehicles come equipped with the XPILOT system, an autonomous driving assistance feature that continues to evolve with over-the-air updates. Beyond just vehicles, Xpeng aims to develop a broader ecosystem encompassing smart transportation, smart cities, and more.

Xpeng operates in an increasingly crowded EV market in China, with competition from both established automakers and a slew of newer EV startups. Direct comparisons are often made between Xpeng and Tesla, especially since the two companies have had legal disputes over alleged intellectual property violations. However, Xpeng has consistently emphasized its independent development and innovation.
