Methodology: where the numbers come from

GoodCarBadCar has tracked what actually sells since March 2007. The database holds monthly and annual new-vehicle sales by model and by brand for the United States and Canada, with history back to the mid-2000s, alongside brand and manufacturer figures for China and Europe and annual totals for 141 countries in the Global Auto Sales Explorer.

Sources

Manufacturers’ own sales reports first: the monthly model-level reports from makers that publish them (Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Subaru, Mazda, and Toyota’s monthly media report), the quarterly releases from makers that report quarterly (GM, Stellantis, Nissan, Volkswagen Group, BMW, Mercedes-Benz), and filings and releases for the rest. Tesla publishes no model-level or US-level volume; GCBC’s Tesla figures are estimates and are labelled as estimates. For China, the CPCA and CAAM; for Europe and other markets, the manufacturers’ regional releases and the national registration bodies where manufacturers do not report directly.

Import and checks

Figures are imported after each release window and checked against the maker’s reported totals; a gap above 2% stops the figure and is logged. Known issues (a double-posted month, a missing cell, a series that starts after the model’s launch) are recorded and corrected from the maker’s release. When a manufacturer revises its numbers, GCBC revises its own.

What a figure means

A model’s figure is the maker’s reported line for that nameplate, including the variants the maker reports inside it (Toyota’s Prius line includes the Plug-in Hybrid). A brand’s figure is the brand’s reported total. Round-thousand totals are estimates.

Freshness

Each data page states the latest month it carries; its modified date changes when the data does.
