Best of the 2024 Tesla Lineup

Tesla’s EV March Continues

The rise of determined competitors like Lucid Motors, Ford and Kia have chipped away at Tesla’s dominance over the years, forcing the carmaker to adopt strategies like aggressive price cutting to stay ahead.

However, Tesla is still a formidable player in the market with a considerable market share. The company will hope that its latest product, the polarizing Cybertruck will keep the brand in the spotlight.

The Cybertruck lines up with other Tesla models that offer a mix of functionality, affordability and outright performance. Together, they form the tip of Tesla’s spear as the American company aims to ward off competition and remain at the head of a rapidly expanding EV market.

Our Take

The Cybertruck was first introduced in November 2019. However, its journey from launch to full production has been fraught with countless process delays. Tesla finally commenced customer deliveries at the tail end of 2023 as a 2024 model. With the Cybertruck, Tesla combines practicality and performance in a bulletproof stainless steel body. The pickup delivers a class-rivaling range, impressive towing and payload capabilities and supercar-worthy performance.

  • Basic Warranty: 4 years /  50,000 miles (80,000 km)

Our Take

The Model S Plaid was introduced in mid-2021 for one purpose only. That was to showcase just how seamlessly a daily-driven family sedan can merge functionality with mind-numbing supercar performance, especially in a straight line. It is a task the Model S Plaid continues to excel at, even in the face of competition from upstarts like the Lucid Air. In September 2023, Tesla reduced the price of the Model S Plaid by about $18,500, making it even more affordable.

Our Take

The Tesla Model Y is Tesla’s best-performing model and was actually one of the most successful vehicles on the market for 2023. The Model Y is an all-rounder that offers advanced technology, a spacious design and sleek design profile. The Long Range variant boasts the added benefit of a range north of the 300-mile mark. These benefits help position the Model Y for another strong market showing for 2024.

Specifications

  • MSRP: starts at $74,990 USD /  $100,940 CAD
  • Engine: Permanent-magnet synchronous AC Motor (front), Induction AC Motor (rear)
  • Power / Torque: 670 hp / N/A (combined)
  • Drivetrain: AWD
  • 0-60 mph: 3.1 seconds
  • Fuel Economy: 124 MPGe | 1.9 L/100 km (City) /  115 MPGe | 2.0 L/100 km (Highway)
  • Range: 405 miles (652 km)
  • Basic Warranty: 4 years /  50,000 miles (80,000 km)

Our Take

The Cybertruck may be Tesla’s shining new baby, but the Model S sedan, one of the brand’s earliest vehicles, remains the flagship. The entry-level Model S is not as punchy as the Plaid variant. However, a 3.2-second sprint to 60 mph is nothing to sneeze at. The Model S combines that impressive performance with a balanced ride and handling. The interior is beginning to look dated, but it still feels comfortable enough to qualify the Model S as an executive sedan.

2024 Tesla Model X

Specifications

  • MSRP: starts at $79,990 USD /  $107,670 CAD
  • Engine: 2 Asynchronous AC Motors
  • Power / Torque: 670 hp / N/A (combined)
  • Drivetrain: AWD
  • 0-60 mph: 3.7 seconds
  • Fuel Economy: 107 MPGe | 2.2 L/100 km (City) /  97 MPGe | 2.4 L/100 km (Highway)
  • Range: 348 miles (560 km)
  • Basic Warranty: 4 years /  50,000 miles (80,000 km)

Our Take

The Tesla Model X might not be the best-looking EV on the market. However, few are as large or as roomy as the unconventional SUV. The falcon doors are more than just for show; able to open in just 11 inches of space. The interior can accommodate up to seven people, a great boost to the Model X’s image as a family car. There is a rapid Plaid variant, just like with the Model S. However, most people will be happy with the performance offered by the regular model.

  • Engine: Induction AC motor (front) & Permanent-magnet synchronous motor (rear)
  • Power / Torque: 394 hp / 377 lb-ft (combined)
  • Drivetrain: AWD
  • 0-60 mph: 4.1 seconds
  • Fuel Economy: 134 MPGe | 1.8 L/100 km (City) /  126 MPGe| 1.9 L/100 km (Highway)
  • Range: 358 miles (576 km)
  • Basic Warranty: 4 years /  50,000 miles (80,000 km)

Our Take

In July 2017, the first Tesla Model 3 rolled off the production line and remained virtually unchanged, styling-wise, for over 5 years. However, in 2023, the small sedan received a long-overdue styling refresh for 2024 MY. The front end is sleeker, and the angles have been tightened, giving the car a sharper appearance. The carmaker has also updated the interior with better-quality materials that should help reduce road noise. The Model 3 is the entry point into the Tesla family and boasts a class-leading range, generous interior space and affordable prices.
