‘Value is the Name of the Game’

Current economic conditions and a tightening budget have pushed affordability to the center of most car-buying decisions. The SUV segment, one of the largest automobile markets today, is not immune to this reality.

Automakers constantly face the challenge of finding the optimum balance between the overall SUV package, influenced by customer needs and market trends, and the ideal price point. The last thing they want is a great SUV priced beyond the reach of the target market.

Carmakers have experienced varying degrees of success in finding that ‘sweet spot,’ with some manufacturers able to offer products that tick most of the right boxes – affordability, practicality and design.

Here, we check out some of the best SUVs for the value in 2024.

Our Take

The Kia Telluride is a clear class leader in the mid-size SUV segment. The three-row SUV debuted in 2020, and its sterling reputation is further underscored by an impressive haul of motoring awards. The Kia Telluride scores big points with its styling, capable V6 power plant and a cabin space that does a great job of initiating the luxury feel of much pricier SUVs. It is also available in several trim levels, increasing its ability to capture a broader market segment.

2024 Ford Bronco

Specifications

  • MSRP: Starts from $41,525 USD /  $55,927 CAD
  • Engine: 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder
  • Power / Torque: 300 hp /  325 lb-ft

  • Basic Warranty: 3 years /  36,000 miles (60,000 km)

Our Take

The iconic Bronco nameplate was resurrected by Ford for the 2021 MY, and so far, the hardy SUV is holding its own against its main rival, the Jeep Wrangler. True to its nature, the Bronco is an extremely capable off-road vehicle, not lacking in driver engagement. Ford has also made the Bronco available in up to 8 different trims for the 2024 MY. Toss in the almost endless list of customizations, and you’ve got a very appealing all-American SUV package with great value.

2024 Chevrolet Trax

Specifications

  • MSRP: Starts from $21,495 USD /  $28,950 CAD
  • Engine: 1.2-litre turbocharged inline-3
  • Power / Torque: 137 hp /  162 lb-ft
  • Transmission: FWD

  • Fuel Economy: 28 MPG (city) | 8.4 L/100 km /  32 MPG | 7.4 L/100 km (highway)
  • Basic Warranty: 3 years /  36,000 miles (60,000 km)

Our Take

Chevrolet has done a great job of refreshing its baby SUV for the 2024 MY. The Chevrolet Trax has grown bigger, with a longer wheelbase that now translates to increased rear legroom and more cargo space. The Trax also packs more standard features than previous models. Remarkably enough, it is priced lower than the model it replaces, and this should help it win over a few hearts in its target segment.

2024 Hyundai Kona Hybrid

Specifications

  • MSRP: Starts from $38,400 USD /  $51,718 CAD
  • Engine: 1.6-litre naturally aspirated 4-cylinder + Electric Motor
  • Power / Torque: 139 hp /  195 lb-ft (combined)
  • Transmission: FWD

  • Basic Warranty: 5 years /  60,000 miles (100,000 km)

Our Take

With less than 150 hp, outright performance is not a priority for the Hyundai Kona Hybrid. Where it excels is in terms of excellent fuel efficiency, smooth ride, and handling balance. The stylish exterior design is well complemented by a modern interior with loads of space for an SUV of its size. The overall package helped the Hyundai Kona clinch the title of Best Compact SUV for 2024 by Fleet News Awards.

2024 Tesla Model X

Specifications

  • MSRP: Starts from $81,630 USD /  $109,578 CAD
  • Engine: 2 Asynchronous AC Motors
  • Power / Torque: 670 hp / N/A (combined)
  • Transmission: AWD

  • Range: 348 miles (560 km)
  • Basic Warranty: 4 years /  50,000 miles (80,000 km)

Our Take

The Model X is one of Tesla’s early mass-production vehicles and, commendably, remains a strong seller for the brand. The design highlight is, undoubtedly, the upward-swinging rear doors, but the Model X is not just about looks. There’s plenty of technology on offer, too and access to Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network is an added bonus that continues to make the Model X a formidable rival.

Specifications

  • MSRP: Starts from $35,070 USD /  $47,233 CAD
  • Engine: 2.5-litre 4-cylinder + 3 Electric Motors
  • Power / Torque: 219 hp /  NA (combined)

  • Basic Warranty: 3 years /  36,000 miles (60,000 km)

Our Take

2024 will be the final model year for the Venza, and we are sorry to see it go. The Venza rejoined the Toyota lineup in 2021 as a new SUV after a 6-year hiatus and has impressed with its bold modern styling and hybrid efficiency. Other perks include a premium interior crammed full of standard safety features and the brand’s reputation for quality and reliability. There should be plenty of bargain deals for the Venza in its last year on the market, so potential buyers may want to shop around for the best options.

Kia EV9

Specifications

  • MSRP: starts at $56,395 USD /  $75,955 CAD
  • Engine: Permanent-magnet synchronous motor (rear)
  • Power / Torque: 215 hp /  258 lb-ft (combined)
  • Drivetrain: RWD (optional AWD)
  • 0-60 mph: 7.7 seconds
  • Fuel Economy: 88 MPGe /  2.7L/100 km (combined)
  • Range: 230 miles (370 km)
  • Basic Warranty: 5 years /  60,000 miles (100,000 km)

Our Take

The Kia EV9 is more than just an EV alternative to the Telluride. The South Korean carmaker has been able to give the EV9 its own identity with a distinct design that is decidedly more upscale and daring than its ICE sibling. With 82 cubic feet of space, the EV9 currently ranks among the roomiest family electric SUVs. It’s barely been on the market for a year, but the EV9 has already been declared ‘World’s Best Car for 2024’ by an esteemed panel of judges at the Women’s Worldwide Car of the Year (WWCOTY).

2024 Nissan Rogue

Specifications

  • MSRP: Starts from $28,320 USD /  $38,142 CAD
  • Engine: 1.5-litre Turbocharged inline-3
  • Power / Torque: 201 hp /  225 lb-ft
  • Transmission: FWD (optional AWD)
  • 0-60 mph: 7.8 seconds
  • Fuel Economy: 30 MPG (city) | 7.8 L/100 km /  37 MPG | 6.4 L/100 km (highway)
  • Basic Warranty: 3 years /  36,000 miles (60,000 km)

Our Take

In 2021, the Rogue received a much-needed design refresh and power bump that helped keep it relevant in the crowded SUV segment. Tweaks for the 2024 MY include new wheels, a new grille, and the addition of a 12.3-inch infotainment display on the interior. The 2024 Rogue is also big on fuel efficiency and packs a decent list of standard features, and driver aids, all at an attractive price point.

2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5

Specifications

  • MSRP: starts at $43,175 USD /  $58,149 CAD
  • Engine: Permanent-magnet synchronous motor (rear)
  • Power / Torque: 168 hp /  NA
  • Drivetrain: RWD
  • 0-60 mph: 7.4 seconds
  • Fuel Economy: 127 MPG (city) | 1.9 L/100 km /  94 MPG | 2.5 L/100 km (highway)
  • Range: 220 miles (354 km)
  • Basic Warranty: 5 years /  60,000 miles (100,000 km)

Our Take

Hyundai is known for its bold designs and the Ioniq 5 stands out as one of its more extreme ideas. The EV boasts edgy styling that allows it to stand out from the crowd. In addition to its aesthetics, the Ioniq 5 has also proven to be practical, comfortable and fun to drive, a big plus for an EV that lacks the drama of a combustion engine. Several awards to its name offer added proof of the Ioniq 5’s market acceptance.

Volvo EX30

Specifications

  • MSRP: starts at $36,245 USD /  $48,816 CAD
  • Engine: Permanent-magnet synchronous motor (rear)
  • Power / Torque: 268 hp /  253 lb-ft
  • Drivetrain: RWD
  • 0-60 mph: 5.1 seconds
  • Fuel Economy: NA
  • Range: 275 miles (442 km)
  • Basic Warranty: 4 years /  50,000 miles (80,000 km)

Our Take

The Swedish carmaker is not exactly known for inexpensive vehicles. However, the EX30 attempts to break that mould with a starting price under $40,000 (CAD $54,000). The small SUV also shines with a quirky, attention-grabbing styling. Look beyond the price point and design, and you’ll find other selling points like its agile handling and decent range. The EX30 may be new to the market, but it already seems poised for a good run.
