Mini Sales Data, Trends, Analysis & Current Lineup for the U.S Automotive Market

This is your hub for all of the Mini sales data for the U.S market. Mini is a British automotive marquee known for its small cars. The Mini brand was first launched in 1969 by a now-defunct car manufacturer, the British Motor Corporation. The brand was then acquired by Rover Group in 1986. Today, the Mini brand is owned by the German automotive company, BMW, which markets it worldwide.

After selling over 5.3 million vehicles, Mini is the most popular British car of all time. The Mini brand has gone on to charm the world which caused it spawn a host of derivatives. It even became a star in films and a fashion icon at the height of its popularity.

Today, Mini is still very popular around the world. In fact, thousands of these are still found on the road. The pre-1980 versions of Mini are now even considered as a collector’s item. Mini has managed to establish a small but stable foothold in the US since its introduction in the early 2000s, and has consistently sold between 40k and 65k each year since 2006, before dropping below that mark in 2019 as small cars are losing popularity in the States. 2019 sales were just over half of its peak in 2013. In 2011 the original model (offered as a hatchback, cabrio, coupe, roadster and stationwagon) was joined by the larger Countryman, which has since accounted for about a third of Mini’s sales.

Mini’s relative success stands in contrast to the failure of brands like Smart or models like the Scion (Toyota) iQ to appeal to american buyers, and motivated Fiat to re-enter the US market after decades-long absence, with its cute 500 minicar. Unfortunately for Fiat, the Italian brand also failed to capture the hearts of American buyers and has never reached the same level of sales as Mini, even when sales of the latter started to fall as well.

Mini U.S Sales Figures & Recent Highlights

Even though Mini is sold worldwide, the United States is considered to be its largest market, which accounted for more than 25% of its global sales in 2012. For years, Mini has been selling its car quite well in the US which hovers around 40k and 65k since 2007. Things changed drastically in 2019 though, as Mini sales in the US dropped to just 36,165 which is its lowest  since 2002. This is probably because the demand for small cars in the US has dropped while the SUV market continues to rise.

Mini sales in the US have been on a downward trend in recent years, due to a number of factors, including the overall decline in the car market, the rise of SUVs, and the increasing popularity of electric vehicles. There are a few new developments that could help Mini reverse this trend. The company is introducing a new electric SUV, the Mini Cooper SE Countryman, in 2023. The Countryman is a popular model for Mini, and the electric version could help the brand attract new customers. Mini is also making some changes to its lineup of gasoline-powered cars. The company is discontinuing the Mini Cooper hardtop and convertible, but it is adding a new performance model, the Mini Cooper JCW GP. The GP is expected to be a popular model for enthusiasts.
