Toyota Camry Overview

The Toyota Camry is one of the best-selling and most recognizable cars in the world. Known for its reliability, efficiency, and overall value, the Camry has been a staple in the midsize sedan segment for decades. The Camry was introduced in 1982, replacing the Toyota Celica Camry, a model that existed in the late 1970s as a four-door version of the Celica coupe.

The name “Camry” is derived from the Japanese word “kanmuri,” meaning “crown,” following Toyota’s naming tradition (with other models named Crown, Corona, etc.). Over the years, the Camry has often been the best-selling car in the U.S., frequently battling with the Honda Accord for the top spot in the midsize sedan segment. Its popularity can be attributed to its reputation for reliability, comfort, and resale value.

The Camry has seen multiple generations, each with redesigns to its exterior, interior, and mechanical components. While early models were relatively basic in design, newer iterations, especially from the 2010s onwards, have adopted a more aggressive and sporty design language. The interior has also seen substantial upgrades over the years, with modern Camrys offering a plethora of tech features, quality materials, and comfort-oriented design. Over the years, the Camry has been available with a range of engines, from efficient four-cylinders to more powerful V6s. A hybrid version has also been available since the late 2000s.

Toyota Camry Sales Figures

While the Camry is especially popular in North America, it’s a global model, with sales in regions including Asia, Australia, the Middle East, and more. Depending on the market, the Camry can have variations in specifications, design cues, and features.
