Continuing the slowing growth seen last month across the Canadian auto market, March’s figures show a slight drop in sales for the month – the first time this year so far that the Canadian market has not grown year-on-year.
The figures remain historically high despite inevitable comparisons with March 2017, a record month for the market. Year-to-date, Canadian vehicle sales remain up by 1.9% on last year’s figures at the end of the first quarter.
General Motors lead the way coming out of the first quarter, with a 6% increase in sales year-to-date following January and February’s strong sales. March wasn’t a stand out month for the Detroit automaker overall, though it is the only Detroit manufacturer to post overall growth this year so far.
The Toyota motor brand saw a 98% increase in sales volume last month, spurring Toyota as a manufacturer to an 8.4% year-on-year increase in March.
Steep declines for Dodge and Chrysler have kept Fiat Chrysler Automobiles in the red this year, despite sharp increases at the Jeep and Ram brands higher up the table.
