Africa Passenger Car Sales for 2006
South Africa remained the largest car market in Africa in 2006. It had a well-developed automotive industry and accounted for a significant portion of car sales on the continent. Popular car brands included Toyota, Volkswagen, Ford, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. The market consisted of both locally manufactured vehicles and imported models. Total passenger car sales increased by 14.7% to 481k cars sold.
Countries like Egypt, Morocco, and Algeria continued to have relatively larger car markets compared to other African nations. Egypt had an established automotive industry, with locally produced models from brands like Ghabbour, Speranza, and MCV. In Morocco, brands like Renault and Peugeot had a strong presence. Algeria also witnessed increased car sales, with brands like Renault, Peugeot, and Hyundai being popular. Egypt and Morocco both saw 40% and 34% growth respectively as their economies grew as did disposable incomes and the middle class.
