For the seventh consecutive month, sales of the Infiniti M sedan lineup declined, year-over-year. Mercedes-Benz sells 10 E-Class sedans, coupes, convertibles, and wagons for every solitary Infiniti M sale in America. Even rare cars like the Jaguar XF and Lincoln MKS sell more frequently than the bigger of Infiniti’s two sedans. Maybe all they need is to change its name from M to Q70. That’ll surely do the trick.
Speaking of the E-Class, May was the third straight month in which sales declined. The recent refresh should attract more buyers in the near future, however. E-Class volume is down 7% this year; sales of its CLS-Class spin-off are down 3.4%. Overall, sales at Mercedes-Benz’s passenger car division are up this year, nonetheless, as C-Class volume has risen by 7083 units in five months and the S-Class, SL-Class, and SLK have all reported gains.

BMW car sales, on the other hand, are down 5% this year as the Z4’s 20-unit improvement and the 6-Series’ 28% jump aren’t nearly enough to overcome the declining volume reported by the 1-Series, 3-Series, 5-Series, and 7-Series.
At this time last year, BMW’s 3-Series had outsold the C-Class by 8842 units – the 3er ranked 47th among new vehicles and the C-Class was 59th. This year, the C-Class ranks 51st, one spot ahead of the 3-Series, 58 units ahead of the BMW. May sales were certainly in BMW’s favour. The 3-Series outsold the C-Class by 1294 units last month.

* vehicle also displayed in another GCBC segment breakdown
GCBC isn’t here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better, right? This explains why you’ll see the Acura ILX here but also with mainstream cars like the Buick Verano, too, and the Audi A5 is also displayed with coupes and convertibles… because readers have wanted it both ways. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts.
