U.S. Small Car Sales April 2012 Click Any Chart For A Larger View |
U.S. passenger car sales rose slightly less than 2% in April 2012 even as light truck sales improved 2.7%. The Chevrolet Cruze was responsible for delivering 7000 fewer sales this April. Hyundai’s Elantra was down by more than 5200 sales. Nissan Sentra sales dropped by approximately 2000 units. Ford lost 4000 Fiesta sales. Honda Fit sales plunged by more than 4900 units.
Among larger cars, Buick Regal sales fell by precisely 1673 units. Buick, however, sold 2989 Veranos in April 2012 and, of course, zero at this time last year. Sales of the Volkswagen CC were worse than cut in half, a statistic bad enough to drag the CC onto GoodCarBadCar’s list of America’s worst-selling cars. Chevrolet saw Impala sales fall by more than 6100 units. The Lucerne is dead, so Buick inevitably lost those 3000 sales. But LaCrosse sales also fell. The 20% drop worked out to 1104 fewer buyers.

U.S. Midsize Car Sales April 2012 |
Yet again we would say, despite these drastic losses, passenger car sales did rise in April 2012. The losses posted by Chevrolet’s three bigger sedans (and the disappearance of 6222 HHR sales) may be an easier pill to swallow when one realizes that the Sonic has proven to be a hit so far. Year-to-date, compared with the Aveo, Chevy subcompact sales are up 120%. Chrysler is losing the Caliber, but before even gaining the Dart, the Fiat 500 is finally proving to be a big help. 3849 were sold in April. Had Accord sales remained level, the Honda division’s car branch would have been down 15.8%. Instead, Accord sales shot up 25.6% and Honda’s car branch was down just 5.5%.
The Accord represented 53.7% of Honda car sales, 32.2% of Honda brand sales, 49.1% of Honda/Acura car sales, and 29% of all Honda/Acura sales in April. The Accord wasn’t America’s best-selling car last month, however. That crown was worn by the Toyota Camry for the sixth consecutive month.
