Our Take Brand & Corporation Rankings

March 2018 turned out to be a record month in terms of sales volume in the US auto market. A 0.62% year-on-year increase across the market was driven predictably by upticks in SUV sales for many of the highest volume brands.

Ford brand: up 3.6% year-on-year with 7.3% increase in SUV sales. Toyota brand: increase of 4.5% year-on-year, fuelled by best-ever March sales of light trucks for the brand, with best first quarter for its trucks leading to best first quarter in a decade. Chevrolet crossover sales up 39% year-on-year, boosting the brand’s March sales by 15.6%. The top-three brands in the US auto market in March accounted for over 43,000 additional sales between them compared with the same month in 2017.

Closing out the first quarter, General Motors has increased its lead compared with Q1 2017 over Ford Motor Company; the former has seen sales increase 3.8% year-to-date, while the latter’s sales are down almost 3% year-to-date.

Toyota Motor Corporation’s overall sales in the first quarter put it just 26,000 units behind Ford Motor Company, compared with a gap of over 80,000 units between the two automakers this time last year.

Fiat Chrysler rounded out March 2018 with its best results since March 2001, with sales of vehicles from the Jeep and to a lesser extent Chrysler brands behind most of its strong performance.
