Top 20 Best-Selling Cars In America – March 2011

Apart from the Chevrolet HHR’s departure and the Ford Fiesta’s inclusion, the list of America’s best-selling cars is full of the same models in March as it was in February. Ah, but the order has changed, evidenced by the status arrows in the third column.

20% of America’s 20 most popular cars posted lower sales in March 2011 than in March 2010, the 2011 Toyota Camry being the most famous of the bunch. Ford Focus sales are falling, true, but expect a big boost in coming months as the now-in-production 2012 Ford Focus arrives at dealerships. Worse than the Chevrolet Malibu’s 12.4% year-over-year drop is the Malibu’s 18.5% decline from February in a market which grew by more than 26%.

80% of America’s 10 best-selling cars weren’t American cars, though their status as American-built cars is often secure. The Ford Fusion was America’s best-selling American in March… but the Fusion is manufactured in Mexico. The Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, and Toyota Camry are made in America, y’all.

All the numbers on America’s 20 favourite cars are below.

  1. The top three cars are all fantastic, not surprised by the sales numbers.
The Camry is a fantastic car to be improved just that much more in a short while by the introduction of the 2012 model. Dependable, smooth, confident and long lasting vehicle in the Camry.

  2. yeah i live near a hertz rental place and its full of toyotas nissans and other japanese cars so whos doing the fleet sales

  4. What this doesn't take into account (other than sales by body style of a particular model, as mentioned) is how many of these sales were to individual car buyers vs. fleets. It's easy to put up impressive numbers by shoving massive volumes off on fleet buyers (remember the old Ford Taurus?) but resale value can suffer because of it.

  5. You may have heard Nissan saying, "the Nissan Altima sold 32,289 units in March to become the best-selling sedan in America." Note the use of the term "sedan". Nissan sells both an Altima sedan and an Altima coupe, but they are grouping all of those sales into the 32,289 total Altima "sedan" sales. But when Honda, which sells an Accord sedan, Accord coupe, and Accord Crosstour, sells 33,616 Accords in total, Nissan takes off the Crosstour bodystyle's 2083 sales. Now, if Nissan wants to say the Altima is the best-selling car, I could kind of see it. But only barely.

Nissan could feel free to call the Murano the Altima Murano and pick up another 5682 sales for the Altima. But they can't blame Honda for doing the same with the Crosstour, which really is just a tall (and ugly) Accord hatchback. What's worse, Nissan goes ahead and uses total sales from multiple bodystyles but still just says this is "sedan" stuff, when it clearly isn't. Might Nissan have the best-selling sedan in America in March? Quite possibly. But Nissan didn't sell 32,289 Altima sedans, of that we can be sure. Some of those 32,289 sales were coupes. If Nissan sold 826 Altima coupes or if Honda sold 69 Accord coupes, the Toyota Camry would actually be the best-selling sedan in America in March.

  6. Not surprised at the accord being first. Most refined out of all the top selling cars in my opinion.
