Our Take On The Sporty Car Sales Numbers

Most sporty car nameplates saw sales fall year-on-year in August in Canada, with the drops in each segment painting a stark picture.

Muscle car sales fell by 30% year-on-year; Euro sports car sales fell by 45.6% overall; sales of the miscellaneous sports cars listed below fell by a combined 11.38%; premium sports cars ended August having sold 37.8% fewer cars this August than last year overall.

The drops in the muscle car segment were decided by a fall in Mustang sales, though these come on a backdrop of strong sales last August for the pony car – last month was still the third best August Mustang has had in the Canadian market since 2010.

Similarly, Euro sports cars suffered badly at the drop in Audi TT sales, while the ageing F-Type’s sales volume halved compared with last August.

Soaring Mazda Miata sales were he growth highlight in the miscellaneous sports cars category, while the Fiat 124 Spider, underpinned by the Mazda, broke even. Tumbling sales of the Toyota GT-86 hit this segment hard.
