Audi debuted the performance version of the A5 Sportback at the New York International Auto Show in March, breaking from tradition by announcing that its sales launch will take place in America.
Traditionally performance cars from European marques have their initial sales launches in Europe, but Audi have taken the decision to launch their five-passenger, twin-turbo, all-wheel drive 174mph RS5 Sportback in America first, no doubt off the back of the confidence that the sales success of the more conventional A5 has given the German brand so far.
Since its arrival in 2016, the current-generation A5’s sales have markedly outstripped those of its predecessor; March 2018 was no different, with a 283.8% year-on-year increase in sales. For the first quarter, A5 sales are up 363.3%.
Audi of America has for the past year also had dedicated Audi Sport sections at 202 of its dealerships across the US, with the brand noting a 72% increase in sales of its Audi Sport models in 2017.
While TT and R8 sales have been down of late, the RS5 Sportback will give buyers seeking a ballistic-fast Audi but also the practicality that a saloon-cum-coupe offers a lot to think about.
In the muscle car segment, sales of the Dodge Challenger leapt 30.9% year-on-year last month, allowing the Challenger to surge ahead into the green year-to-date.
Its growth was not enough to spark growth in the overall muscle car market last month however; falling sales for the Camaro and Mustang mean that muscle cars emerged from March 370 sales down year-on-year.
Combined sales of the Porsche 718 Cayman and Boxster represent over 43% of all Euro sports car sales for last month, with steep drops seen for every other model in the chart.
