Our Take On The Small SUV Sales Numbers
An updraft of newcomers provides the tall hatch and crossover segment of the Canadian SUV market with a 58.2% year-on-year increase for the month of August. Year-to-date, these entry-level SUVs have seen popularity skyrocket, with the total number sold in this category up a staggering 74% on the performance through August 2017.
Qashqai still leads the charge, while the Kicks – a new replacement for the Juke, adds to the bottom line in the midfield. Hyundai’s Kona – also recently introduced – was the second-biggest seller here in August, ahead of established nameplates from Mazda, Subaru and Buick.
Small SUV sales were overall stable in August compared with 2017’s levels, with a few marques making ground on their performance this time last year. Most improved was the Mitsubishi Outlander, with its uptick providing the Japanese brand with a 18% overall increase in sales in Canada.
