Our Take On The Small SUV Sales Numbers
Sturdy increases for some big brands in the small SUV segment were not enough to save the segment’s growth in April 2018. Buyers in Canada overall bought 4.67% fewer small SUVs this April than last.
The daily selling rate of entry-level SUVs stayed above last April’s despite the drop. There was a 9.6% surge in Honda CR-V sales volume, an increase of 8.7% year-on-year for the Nissan Rogue and the Volkswagen Tiguan impressed once again by doubling last year’s sales volume for the month and the first third of the year.
Tall hatch and crossover SUVs, which are currently selling in much lower volumes than their slightly larger counterparts, saw a steep year-on-year increase in sales last month. Sales rose by just under 50% year-on-year, helped for yet another month by new nameplates to the sector.
Even without the new additions, the models listed in the bottom chart below still would have topped the total for April 2017 despite the loss of two selling days for the month.
The Kia Soul, an established nameplate in this segment, topped 1000 sales for the month after dipping below four figures last April. The Mazda CX-3 seems to be increasing in estimation in the Canadian market, with April topping off its best first-third to a calendar year ever in the Canada.
