The Toyota RAV4 managed to comfortably outsell the rest of the small SUV market in the USA last month, despite sales falling 2.4% compared with a year ago.

RAV4 sales remained exceedingly high – at 42,222 for the month of August – as its nearest competitor, the Honda CR-V, managed just under 8000 fewer units even with an 11.7% surge in sales.

The majority of small vehicle nameplates to have reported figures for August 2018 saw sales increase, for a total increase across all models (excluding GM vehicles) of 17.9% compared with last August.

Among the brands happily riding the wave of SUV demand to increased deal value is Volkswagen. Sales of its Tiguan were up 143% last month, as the brand crossed the 100,000-SUVs in a year threshold for the first time in the US – at only eight months in.

Tiguan sales along with sales of the new large VW SUV Atlas make up more than half of VW’s SUV sales in 2018 so far.
