Our Take On The Small And Midsize Luxury SUVs Sales Numbers

Sales of premium small and midsize SUVs rose by 9.47% year-on-year in February, keeping a 9.6% gap to last year’s year-to-date figure to this point after January’s sales put the market more than 10% ahead.

Steep drops for two of our subcompact luxury SUV nameplates year-on-year were almost met by sharp growth for the other pair; the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class saw sales drop by 15% year-on-year, though has still grown year-to-date, while the Infiniti QX30 after two month sees sales more than 50% behind this point last year.

In the compact luxury SUV chart, leading the charge after almost doubling its sales year-on-year is the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, which also now sits top of its sub-segment, and second-top of the small and midsize luxury SUV segment overall behind the midsize Lexus RX.

GLC was also Mercedes-Benz’s best selling nameplate in the USA overall in February. The Lexus NX had its best-ever February, with 21.3% year-on-year growth as the Lexus brand also celebrated its best-ever February.

The return of the Land Rover Discovery adds an extra 761 sales to the total for the midsize luxury SUV chart in February. The Discovery picks up where the LR4 left off, with seven seats and a rugged edge that sets it apart from the more dolled-up Range Rover family.

The lift in sales from it and the Range Rover Velar will be welcomed by Jaguar Land Rover; Land Rover’s second-best ever February of sales was contrasted by a difficult month for sister brand Jaguar, with its entry into this table, the F-Pace midsize luxury SUV, seeing sales fall by almost 40% year-on-year.
