Small Car sales in Canada didn’t have a great March. The segment was down over 3,000 units for the month when compared to this time last year. This drop is also reflected in the YTD sales numbers, suggesting this won’t be a strong year for the segment.
The Honda Civic led the way in terms of overall sales. The model actually saw a more than seven percent jump in sales for March. The next three models all saw sales decreases.
Many of the models that saw sales decreases saw drops in the double digit percentages. It wasn’t all bad news, though. Several models saw strong sales surges, including the VW Jetta, Kia Soul, Mitsubishi Mirage, and Hyundai Veloster among others.
When broken down into sub-segments, it’s easy to see that the City Car, Warm Hatchback, and Tall Hatchback segments all saw sales growth. It’s safe to say that sedans are what’s selling poorly.
Important note: Both Ford and GM have switched to quarterly reporting, making it more difficult to accurately gauge crossover sales. We won’t have results to report for Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Ford or Lincoln until the end of each quarter.
