Our Take On The Compact Car Sales Numbers
Having carried the small car market in Canada to growth through the first quarter, four months proved just too much for the tall hatch segment to hold the year-to-date total figure for the below vehicles above that of the first one third of 2017.
The tall hatch segment saw sales soar once again, with April’s figures an almost 50% improvement year-on-year. Nissan’s Qashqai once again held off the Subaru Crosstrek in the year-to-date column, but last month 55 more XVs were sold than Qashqais.
Sales of compact cars, the biggest slice of the small car market that includes top-sellers like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Elantra, fell by an overall 20.4% on last April, a much steeper rate of decline than seen in the wider passenger car market.
The overall year-on-year drop across the entirety of the small cars market was roughly in line with the drops across the entire passenger car market, just slightly steeper; small cars fell by 10.6% year-on-year, while all passenger car sales in Canada dropped by 9.8%.
