The GCBC Analysis
Small Car sales in America in March didn’t perform very well. The segment was down roughly 29,500 units. The overall sales leader was the Honda Civic, which actually saw a more than three percent rise in sales.
When broken down into subsegments, you can see that all except the hatchback segment saw significant sales decreases. The hatchback segment was actually up around 730 units when compared to this time last year.
The biggest subsegment losses came from the compact car segment. It saw about 28,600 fewer sales in the month of March. Other segments decreases were far less dramatic.
There were some models that saw notable sales increases for the month, though. The VW Jetta, Toyota Yaris, and Hyundai Veloster all saw serious gains over this time last year. However, their boosts in sales did little to help the segment overall.

Important note: Both Ford and GM have switched to quarterly reporting, making it more difficult to accurately gauge crossover sales. We won’t have results to report for Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Ford or Lincoln until the end of each quarter.
