Our Take On The Small Cars Sales Numbers
With July’s sales putting the squeeze on the US automotive market as a whole, with small passenger cars one of the hardest hit segments as consumers continue to opt more frequently for SUVs and crossovers.
The month was a difficult one for the usually segment-leading Honda Civic, for which a perfect storm of short inventory, one fewer selling day and the aforementioned market trend towards higher-riding vehicles leaving it with a deficit of 28.3% compared with July 2017 and pushing it into second beneath the Toyota Corolla family for the month.
Bucking the trend, though only just, in the small car sales chart were the Hyundai Elantra and Nissan Sentra. Both went against drops for their respective manufacturers in July to post year-on-year increases with the Sentra currently the highest-selling small car year-to-date to have sold more cars this year than last to this point.
