Our Take On The Compact Car Sales Numbers

The Canadian compact car market had a better month in September, with strong showings from the Kia Rio and Toyota Yaris going some way to offset the losses made by the rest of the segment. It’s a different story year-to-date, as the compact segment continues to trail by 25% on 2016.

A reduction in sales of City Cars has little to do with the removal of the Scion iQ from the market – last September the iQ sold only 18 cars – and more to do with difficulties with two of the segments’ heavy hitters. September was a better month overall, with 88 more sales being made across the segment, though YTD the Nissan Micra and Mistubishi Mirage are both significantly behind the same point last year.

The Mini Countryman saw healthy growth in the Tall Hatchbacks segment, with a September that yielded almost five times as many sales as the same month last year. This month was the Countryman’s best showing in the Canadian market for almost two years, with October 2015 the last time it reached the double-ton for deliveries.
