Our Take On The Compact Car Sales Numbers

The Subcompact car market in Canada surged forward year-on-year in October, though its year-to-date is still over 10,000 behind this point last year.

Last year’s leading subcompact the Hyundai Accent’s deficit was more than cancelled out by strong showings from the Kia Rio, Chevrolet Sonic, Nissan Versa and Toyota Yaris, which combined forces to push the segment into positive growth.

City cars also posted an increase year-on-year, with only the Mitsubishi Mirage selling fewer cars this October than last for the segment.

Tall Hatches continue to be the golden child here, growing by 35.5% year-on-year. This area of the market’s growth is down in part to the addition of the Nissan Qashqai and Toyota C-HR in the Canadian market, though we mustn’t decry good performances from the Subaru Crosstrek, the Mini Countryman, Mazda’s CX-3 and the Buick Encore.

Warm hatches meanwhile remain distinctly out of favour with the Canadian consumer – October saw sales almost halved from a year ago in this segment.
