Our Take On The Compact Car Sales Numbers

Despite first glance appearances, Canada’s small cars market actually grew by 8.4% year-on-year.

There was ittle improvement in November for the Subcompact car market in Canada. A rift of almost 11,000 sales seperates the segment’s year-to-date from this time last year.

The Kia Rio was one of the few to post growth in this segment, and even then only year-on-year. A 78% improvement is impressive, but the Rio remains 20% down when compared with last year’s performance to date.

The only year-to-date improvements in the Subcompact segment were for the Chevrolet Sonic and Nissan Versa, with all others firmly in the red – most behind by double figure percentages.

The powerhouse of the y-o-y increase is the Tall Hatch segment – bolstered by strong growth for the Mazda CX-3, Subaru Crosstrek and Mini Countryman, as well as the addition of the Nissan Qashqai.

Year-to-date, the Tall Hatch segment is also up over 15,000 sales, balancing out deep losses in the other sub-segments of the Small Cars arena to push the market as a whole 0.5% ahead of where it sat this time last year.
