Our Take On The Small Cars Sales Numbers

7.7% fewer small cars were sold in the USA this February than last, putting the small car market as a whole down 8.7% year-to-date at the end of the first two months of 2018.

The Honda Civic very narrowly edged out the Toyota Corolla in February to be the top-selling small car. 795 units separate the pair, though both saw declines on last February’s sales.

Tall hatches is once again the only sub-segment below to see growth, with the Subaru Crosstrek and Toyota C-HR each adding over 4000 sales to the total, and the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport contributing over 3000 above its performance last February.

Demand for warm hatchbacks continues in its cool fashion, with 35.2% fewer of these nameplates being sold this February than last.

With sales of its Golf hatchback down almost 40% year-on-year through February, Volkswagen of America is looking forward to the upcoming new Jetta in the second quarter, which by and large fares better than its hatchback counterpart in this segment.

Outside of the tall hatches segment, just four nameplates light up green in terms of monthly sales growth: the Kia Rio and Honda Fit in the subcompact segment, and the Nissan Sentra and Acura ILX in the compact segment. All of these represent value-for-money purchases, and (with the exception of the Acura) can be had for less than $17,000, which may be attracting more frugal buyers as credit conditions tighten.

February is a month where US consumers traditionally prefer SUVs and trucks (and in a market where the general push is towards sales of such vehicles), while many buyers will be holding off until their tax return before commiting to a vehicle purchase.
